Etsy Wednesday #12: Who stole the cookie...

Something I've been wanting for a very long time is a vintage cookie jar. I've searched high and low, in antique malls, on on ebay - but I don't want a freaky clown or a goose with a bow around its neck holding on to my Oreo's or snickerdoodles. I loved my grandmothers' cookie jar (a train - The "Cookie RR" to be exact). It was always a surprise to lift the lid and find something in there. Sometimes homemade, sometimes store bought but always yummy. I want that kind of tradition in my house (yes, even after the holidays when I really don't feel like I want to eat another cookie ever again).

After a fun trip to my favorite antique mall last week I was re-inspired to keep looking for a cookie jar. When I got home and checked Etsy Vintage I was pleasantly surprised at the offerings there. Here are my top picks. Should it be whimsical? Have good typography? Be understated? Help me decide! Leave me a comment as to your favorite one.

Wall Wednesday time again, folks! With the exception of that lovely "Milk Farm" print, I'm breaking out of the picture frame to show you some fave three dimensional items I found while searching for 'signs' on Etsy (also - can I just say,  if I see one more "Keep Calm..." type sign I think I am going to seriously lose it). 

The letter 'e' comes from a now defunct bank in my small hometown. That sign is etched in my memory. The unique 70s letterforms were hand carved by our local sign-maker and layered with gold leaf (how fitting for a bank). Pretty cool to see them on Etsy. 

And while that last sign probably has some of my former women's studies professors keeling over in their university offices, I'm sorry ladies ... I just kind of love it.

It has been a while since the last Wall Wednesday - so let's get to it!

I was talking to a friend of mine today who mentioned that she was going be doing a 'space themed' room for her little boy. As I sat down to do Wall Wednesday today I thought I'd take a peek on Etsy to see what they have in the way of space themed art.

Here are a few of my favorites, with links to their respective shops. I'm pretty sure all of these are kid friendly - Space Portrait No.4 might scare some kids but I think it is adorable and hilarious. Just be happy I didn't include the painting of Jabba the Hut ralphing into a toilet. See, I wasn't kidding. You can really find about anything on Etsy these days. Yikes.

I love the color orange. It is not an inherited love, because my grandma actually hates the color and has confessed to once removing all of the orange crayons from her kid's crayon boxes. For real! Anyhow, orange love must skip a generation because I can't get enough.

I had so much fun with the last Wall Wednesday Etsy mash-up, I thought I'd do it again. Last week I had fallen face first into Flu-ville - and really missed doing a wall Wednesday post.

Wall Wednesday #6: Spring Landscape

To mix things up a little bit on this 6th Wall Wednesday, I thought I would highlight 4 different pieces of art, by 4 different artists, all found on Etsy by typing in "spring, landscape" in the search bar on the Etsy.com homepage. There were 84 pages of art tagged with these two words, and I browsed through all of them!

A few things I learned about these pieces. "Pink Breeze" was taken "Through The Viewfinder" (TtV) an old Kodak Duaflex camera, giving it this vintage-y look . "Rise, Shine" is a limited edition print of 75. I love pretty much every single painting in this shop, and I especially love the gardening gloves in this print. Angela Petsis (who painted "Spring Renaissance") is closing her shop to focus in her photography work. So ALL her original paintings (like this one) are on sale. The shop will close on March 21. And, the "Pink Dahlia Still life" photo can be printed in a variety of different sizes - up to 12" x 12". I love the delicate pink and blue in this photo.

Wall Wednesday #5: Mary Kate McDevitt

I love the work of Portland, Oregon Illustrator and Graphic Designer Mary Kate McDevitt, and have had her Etsy shop marked as one of my favorites for a long time - so I'm super excited to introduce you to her this 5th Wall Wednesday.

Her shop features both her "Mini Goals Chalkboards". The slate chalkboards measure 9" x 12" and feature hand painted lettering. They come with with Mini Goals Chalk, and a fun Mini Goals Eraser, and personalized packaging. Her sense of color and the hand lettering on these chalkboards are wonderful. I can't wait to get my hands on some of her work. I can imagine a number of walls in my house that would love to wear one of these!

Her shop also features her paintings and prints that feature fun characters in them that make me smile - like the adorable and grumpy looking bear in the painting above. For some reason I feel like I can relate to him.

Wall Wednesday #4: Harry Stooshinoff

Boulden House, Collage Painting on Panel - $90

For this Wall Wednesday I'd like to introduce you to the wonderful landscape paintings of Canadian artist (and Etsy seller) Harry Stooshinoff. I was immediately drawn to the colors, big skies, and loose yet perfectly placed strokes in Harry's work. I love that they are very graphic, yet representational at the same time.

Forest North, Acrylic Painting on Paper - $45

This guy is nothing short of prolific, just visit his his Etsy shop Paintbox to see what I mean. His small works on paper (acrylic on paper) start at $25 and go up to $50 and there are so many to chose from.

Low Clouds, SOLD - to me!

I am the proud new owner of this beauty "Low Clouds". I just love the cloud shape, the thickness of the paint. And there is something about the composition that is so calming to me. He also sells larger works on paper $100 - $300, and works on canvas or panel that range from $90 - $1000. There is really something for every budget at his shop.

Wall Wednesday: #3 Helen Dardik

Helen Dardik is an amazing talent. I've been in awe of her work since the day I laid eyes on it a few years back. Her attention to detail, her wacky characters, and the loose line work she achieves on the computer are just plain brilliant.

While you might spot her work on products for Blue Q and Mara-Mi she also sells prints at her Etsy shop. The prints she is currently selling are $25.

I recently ordered her ABC print and the quality of the print is just as wonderful as the illustration itself. And Helen, superstar that she is even included a hand written thank you note with my purchase (I saved it, of course).

Wall Wednesday: #2 Geninne Zlatkis

This Wall Wednesday I'm featuring artist Geninne Zlatkis. I've been a huge fan of Geninne's blog for a few years now. Her watercolors never cease to amaze and inspire me. I was super excited when she opened up her Etsy shop in 2006 and have been adding stuff to my list of 'favorites' on Etsy ever since.

Not only are her paintings and mixed media pieces fabulous, she also lives and works in spaces that are equally inspiring and are also frequently shown on her blog. Every time I look at a picture of her home or studio I feel more inspired to make the spaces I live and work in more "me". She lives in Mexico with her husband, two sons and an adorable dog named Turbo .

I love that her paintings are realistic, yet very whimsical and full of imagination. I also admire her use of collage and the sense of play that each piece carries.

Wall Wednesday: #1 Matte Stephens

Hi folks. I had an inspiration recently for a recurring blog post I'm going to call Wall Wednesday. In 2010 my goal is to have less boring walls. You heard it here first. My friends gently poke fun at the fact that as person who makes 2-D work (posters!) for a living has the most bare nekkid walls this side of the Columbia. No kidding, I do. It is kind of embarrassing, really. My walls have just been hanging out in their birthday suit for years and years, and I have been ignoring their cries to dress them in something, anything.

So this year I am taking the bull by the horns. I am going to purchase art I like and can afford. I will frame it, and I will hang it on my walls. This is the NO MORE BORING WALLS MANIFESTO.

I think a lot of people have this issue, maybe not so horribly bad as me but it is out there. Just last week another mom at the co-op preschool we attend was telling me about a print she bought at a frame store. She got it home and decided she didn't like it, and was kind of bummed. When I asked her if she'd ever heard of Etsy and she hadn't, I excitedly told her all about the great original art prints you can find there. So, that is what this feature will be about. Great prints for your walls, that you can find on Etsy. My goal is to feature pieces that are under $100 buckaroos.

So, first things first! Wall Wednesday #1 Matte Stephens.

I am a huge and long time fan of this talented guy's work. I love the colors and shapes he uses, and his subject matter always makes me smile. He recently moved to Portland, Oregon (yes Portland..you officially have all the cool stuff now) and shows work at Veloicty Art and Design in Seattle. Someday I hope to own an original painting, but I am so happy that he offers beautiful prints in his Etsy shop.

I just purchased the print above titled "do nothing" for $60. I've been coveting it for a while now on Etsy and decided what better way to kick off the NO MORE BORING WALLS MOVEMENT of 2010 than with this! Sorry for the all caps, people - I'm just trying to channel my excitement.
